What a Class Actually Looks Like

Here’s a Wednesday night class at the Lysaght Institute, our Newport home until December, so you know what you’d be walking into: a big hall with a proper wooden floor, beginners and old hands dancing side by side, and the steps called out from the front.

First timers start in From Scratch at 7pm. Nobody expects you to know a thing.

February & August

Scuff Ya Boots

Our own dance days, held twice a year. We invite guest instructors along so everyone learns something new, there’s a proper supper, and the wooden floors are big enough for the lot of us.

February at the Holiday Inn, Coldra, Newport. August at Lydney Town Hall.

April

Our Weekend Away in Torquay

Every April we head down to Torquay for the weekend. It’s half board, with our own music, our own dances and a ballroom to ourselves. Fancy dress night is a fixture, and the luggage tags tell you how many times we’ve been back.

Torquay, Devon

May

The Global Line Dance Flash Mob

One day each May, line dancers all over the world learn the same routine and dance it in public. We do our bit somewhere local, and the shoppers rarely see it coming. In May 2025 it was the aisles of Morrisons in Newport.

Caldicot Fun Day

All our classes dance together in Caldicot town centre for the summer fun day, stilt walkers and all.

August

Caerwent Village Show

We took the dances out onto the showground at the Caerwent Village Show: a proper village day out, with marquees round the field, a crowd in the sunshine and grass baked dry by the summer.

August Bank Holiday Monday

Pill Carnival Float

Every August Bank Holiday Monday we dress up a float for the Pill Carnival and dance our way round the route. If you’d like to get involved, see Sarah, Chelle or Sue in class.

Display at Caldicot Castle

We’ve danced in some grand spots, and the lawn in front of Caldicot Castle is up there with the best of them. The sky was grey for this display, but you’d never know it from the dancing.

Food, music & dancing

Fork and Tune at the Cwmcarn Hotel

A line dancing night with a hot supper and live music thrown in. Rebecca sings the country classics between the dances, there’s Texan smoked chilli beef on the menu, and it honestly doesn’t matter if it’s your first time on a dance floor.

November

South Wales Country Music Festival

Each November the Side Kicks lead the dance sessions at the South Wales Country Music Festival, with live bands on stage and a packed floor in front of them.

December

Christmas Party at the Lysaght

We see the year out with a Christmas party at the Lysaght Institute in Newport. Fairy lights on every table, trees round the hall and a floor that stays full all night.
